Mary K. (“MK”) Sandford, Junior Warden, grew up in a small college town in Arkansas where her parents were university professors. Her mother, a sociologist, was active in the local civil rights movement. Her dad, an ordained minister, taught English and worked as a department chair. MK dropped out of high school at age sixteen and entered college as a religion major. While she felt called to preach, she wasn’t permitted to study “sermon preparation.” She then pursued her life long interests in biological anthropology and archaeology, ultimately earning her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado (1984). MK spent most of her career teaching at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she earned awards for teaching and research, the same year (1994) she was awarded tenure. She also served as department head of anthropology and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She met Eileen Jackson in 1986; they became life partners in 1995 and were married in 2012. Eileen, with scholarship in care and medical anthropology, was strongly influenced by the women of the Immaculate Heart Community in California. Both Eileen and Mary felt that they had come home when they met Nigel and felt the welcoming embrace of the St. Augustine’s community. They were received by Bishop Rickel and became Episcopalians in 2017. Now in her fourth and final year in EFM, MK considers it a privilege to serve the St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Community and she hopes to bring her experience in administration, her love of learning and her sense of humor to the position of Junior Warden.
